Cognitive Load Tracker for macOS
No data leaves your Mac — everCognitive Load Tracker processes the following signals locally to compute your focus score. None of this information is transmitted, persisted to disk, or shared.
| Signal | What is captured | What is NOT captured | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keystroke count | Number of key-down events per minute | Which keys were pressed, content typed | RAM only |
| App switches | Name of the app you switch to, timestamp | What you did inside any app | RAM only |
| Window count | Number of visible windows on screen | Window titles, content, screenshots | RAM only |
| Idle periods | Duration of inactivity gaps (>15 s) | What you were doing when idle | RAM only |
| Score history | Composite score sampled once per minute | Any raw event data | RAM, current session |
To count keystrokes, the app requests macOS Accessibility access. This permission allows the app to receive a notification each time any key is pressed — the app increments a counter and immediately discards the event. The key identity, the application you were typing in, and the content you typed are never read or stored.
You can revoke this permission at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility. If revoked, the typing intensity metric will show zero; all other metrics continue to work normally.
The app queries macOS for the number of visible windows on screen using a system API (CGWindowListCopyWindowInfo). It reads only the window layer and dimensions — enough to count user-facing windows. Window titles, application content, and screenshots are never accessed.
The app offers optional one-time tips processed entirely through Apple's StoreKit framework. Cognitive Load Tracker never sees your payment details. Purchase history is managed by Apple and subject to Apple's Privacy Policy.
Cognitive Load Tracker contains no analytics SDKs, no crash reporting services, no advertising networks, and no third-party frameworks of any kind. The app does not share any data with any third party, because no data is collected in the first place.
Cognitive Load Tracker does not collect, use, or disclose personal information from anyone, including children under 13. The app is fully compliant with COPPA and similar regulations by virtue of collecting no personal data.
If this policy changes materially (e.g. a new feature that does collect data), the updated policy will be posted here with a new effective date, and the change will be described in the app's release notes.
Effective date: March 2025
